Marion's Advice for Talking with our Loved Ones

Marion's loss has inspired her to take action.

Marion remembers all the wonderful things about her son. “Alex was very charismatic and genuine. He had a big heart. Despite his anxieties, he always found something that he got excited about. He was a basketball star, and he loved dogs and good food.”

She also remembers the challenges he faced and the tools he used to cope. “He had certain healthy outlets such as sports and being outdoorsy. But for Alex, it was so much adversity early on in his life. And so I, as his mother, understand 100% why Alex began to seek substances.”

Substance use often begins as a way to manage complicated feelings. And every day, good people like Alex are developing substance use disorders. Like other medical conditions, SUD doesn’t change our hearts or who we are deep down.
